For what it's worth ( my tusents ) , yeah, it's always been hardware.
For what it's worth ( my tusents ) , yeah, it's always been hardware. ( Started saying this after ' Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffa ' < LucasArts > ) You need to be able to ' look around ' , turn your actual head, etc. This'll be solved soon I expect however. Once we get to 22nm then 10nm chips + flexible screen tech , you get real VR immersion capacity. < I'm hearing that after 22nm the now commonplace keyboard, mouse, monitor set up will phase out to more a more VR-like arrangement { the long promised gloves, goggles, etc, kind of thing } Hoo hoo !
[this is good]
I'd like to see American FPSs become a televised spectator sport, and see how popular those games get on Japanese TV. Japan's entire attitude about gaming seems to be going in a look-don't-touch direction, what with Japan's own games advancing mainly in aesthetics and storytelling and not really in gameplay. It'll take a long time for American gamers first to develop a real video gaming sports league, grow the domestic TV audience, and then finally broadcast those games to Japanese TV in a serious way. How popular are America's NBA, MLB, NFL, and NASCAR on Japanese TV?
Also, have you tried Mirror's Edge? That's a first person platformer. I saw my apartment mates trying that recently. One of the keys to it seems to be that the camera looks down at the player's feet from time to time.
Mirror's edge....BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARF. At times the camera reminds me of Jumping Flash on crack. That was a first person jumper game on the PS1. A lot of people seemed to like it, but then Sony had to let the IP die.
When Metroid Prime came out, Miyamoto said in an interview that he hoped its domesticated controls and camera movement compared to other FPSs would get it accepted by Japanese customers. How well did that work?
Wikipedia puts MP's sales in Japan at 78,000. That's not bad, but compare that to the 1.5 million in the US? MP2 sold 470,000 copies in North America in 2004 and a total of 40,000 copies in Japan. MP3 looks like it did better, with 34,000 units in the first week of release.

This...Is absolutely awesome!

It's a 2D adaptation of Mirror's Edge. Loads of fun, really simple and easy to get into. And there's going ot be a full version later.
One thing I always thought was behind this aversion to FPS was the fact you couldn't see the character on-screen, Japanese players, apparently, wanting to identify with a cool character rather than pretend to be one. Dunno. The control scheme is an issue, of course, but I think it's more about preferences.
