Still recovering from GDC
GDC was...hectic. I had the Expo Pass only so I tried to network at the Career Pavilion and parties after hours. The first day, I cruised the Exhibit Hall with Eri Izawa, level 70 master Swag Bagger. After the goodie tour, I looked at booths to see if anything really interested me. Other than the showcase of winners and finalists from the Independent Games Festival, nothing felt too terribly relevant. Nintendo and Sony showed off some games. Vendors showed off their technologies, hoping you'd license their money-saving robust development engine. Or so they say.
Thursday, I lived in Career Land. Distributing resumes, trading cards, taking names of people who I should be getting back to if I wasn't coughing my head off from a cold. Yeehaw prescription cough suppressant! A lot of the "big name" companies were present, like Eidos, Microsoft, Midway, etc. I know there are a lot of smaller, local developers that supposedly are hiring but weren't present as far as I knew.
I tracked down a friend I'd been talking with for ages but never met in person, until Thursday night. Somehow, I managed to get into this very very exclusive XNA party. Oh man what a blast. I even ran into a good friend on the train returning from the party as well. There were 3 floors of dancing, food and drink. Holy wow.
Friday...I was so tired. I got in, dropped off a few more resumes and left on a happy talk with some fellows at Valve. Not officially listed in the CP listings, but they were there. I guess that was the case to filter the people who were mindlessly carpeting and those who actually had the brains to look. The best thing I can do is get this game I've been wanting to do done. And I should be able to distribute it for free via Steam too.
On that happy note, I left. the one thing I could have attended was a Portal post mortem with Kim Swift which would have been interesting for sure. But I departed, hopeful and positive. Grabbed some Beard Papas and was on my way home.
